November 28, 2008, Newsletter Issue #100: How to Get a Boat and Learn to Sail

Tip of the Week

Sailing is a relaxing and enjoyable way to see the world’s coastlines without having to worry about the major fuel costs associated with more expensive power cruisers.

There are several types of sailboats. A one type is a lateen, which is basically a surfboard with a sail. A common sailboat is the swing-keel, which is a traditional-looking sailboat that can access very shallow water, and is also trailer-ready due to its keel being able to swing up insides its hull. There is the traditional sailboat with a fixed keel that is seen at marinas around the world. A variation to the traditional design is the catamaran sailboat, which is a sailboat made of two narrow hulls connected by a center expanse in order to gain stability and room. Lastly, there is the Trimaran, which has three hulls instead of two.

Anyone can learn to sail very easily. The concepts are the same on an 8-foot lateen as they are on a 45-foot luxury custom built sailboat. Learning to sail is further simplified by the ample supply of used sailboats for sale. A look in your local paper or at a boatyard bulletin board can potentially lead you to the perfect boat.

If you don’t know if you would like to sail, get a charter sailboat first. Charters range from a one-hour sail to as long as your wallet will allow.
